Washington National Guard fills sandbags as flooding hits Lewis County

Heavy rains and sleet caused river levels to rise and major flooding in Lewis County, Wash. On Friday, January 7, causing highways to close. Authorities temporarily closed a 20-mile stretch of Interstate 5 through Thurston and Lewis counties as flooding worsened on Friday, according to reports. Images released by the Washington National Guard show its members filling sandbags in Centralia during flood control operations in Lewis County, they said. Flooding is expected to affect areas along the Skookumchuck River, Chehalis River and Newaukum River until Saturday evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.
