Tokyo worshipers pray for good health in ice-water purification ceremony

Worshipers in Tokyo participate in the annual ice water purification ritual at Teppozu Inari Shrine, an event to pray for good health in the New Year. Participants warm up by stretching their bodies and jump into a pool of cold water containing huge blocks of ice. The New Year’s Eve event has almost 70 years of history in the community. “I pray the coronavirus pandemic will end soon,” said Yoshiko Shibata, 74, the oldest participant.
