The Oscars will have a host in 2022

The Oscars will once again have a host. After three years of hostless ceremonies, the Oscars will return to shape with the 2022 edition, ABC has announced. The program, which is due to air March 27 on ABC, has yet to announce the happy (?) Performer yet.

Craig Erwich, president of Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment, broke the Oscar news earlier this morning during the ABC portion of the TCA’s winter virtual press tour. He didn’t even say which part of the entertainment industry the host might come from: “It could be me,” he joked before handing over power to Oscar executive producer Will Packer.

“Will really has his pulse on popular culture and entertainment,” Erwich said. “I know he has a lot in store and we’ll have more details to share soon.”

Jimmy Kimmel was the last Oscar host before the program moved to an unhosted ceremony. He hosted the ceremony in 2017 and 2018, receiving generally positive reviews from viewers across the country. Other hosts over the past decade include Chris Rock (2016), Neil Patrick Harris (2015), Ellen DeGeneres (2014), Seth MacFarlane (2013), Billy Crystal (2012) and James Franco / Anne Hathaway (2011 ).

In 2019, it was initially announced that Kevin Hart would take on the role. But after a wave of backlash erupted on Twitter around the comedian’s homophobic claims in previous years, Hart resigned days later. The 2019 event took place without a host, using celebrities between award speeches and announcements to fill the time.

Because the 2019 Oscars saw their scores increase, the Academy and ABC also took the hostless approach in 2020. The scores then dropped slightly, but the COVID-delayed Oscars of 2021 (also hostless) lost more than half of their audience. Now, after three years without an emcee, the Oscars must find someone to take center stage.

In other Oscar news, ABC also announced that Glenn Weiss will return to direct the Oscars for the seventh year in a row. Stay tuned for more updates on the next Oscar host.
