Texas school board approves extended COVID-19 furlough for staff

LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) — The Leander Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved five days of paid COVID-19 extended leave for all employees Thursday night.

The extended leave for contract and non-contract employees of the district is effective retroactively from January 2 to June 30 of this year, depending on the neighborhood.

According to the resolution, staff members who are still able to work remotely will not be granted extended COVID-19 leave unless they are unable to work due to illness. Leave is capped at a maximum of five days per employee for the remainder of the school year.

If an employee has used the eight days previously approved by the District Council, they are still eligible for the additional five days due to the spread of the omicron variant, the resolution states.

Employees requesting to use the leave will be required to submit documentation demonstrating the need for the leave.

The district said this will help protect the health and safety of students, staff, and the LISD community. Earlier this week, Leander ISD experienced bus delays due to a shortage of drivers as many called in sick.
