Su Oh sets the tone in the Australian WPGA at Royal Queensland

Su Oh is doing his best not to be distracted by the prospect of being the first player to win the Karrie Webb Cup on Sunday.

The 25-year-old LPGA player quickly claimed Australia’s inaugural WPGA title, which brings with it the Cup prize, with a five-under 66 first round at Royal Queensland on Thursday

“I think it would be such an honor,” Oh said.

“It would mean a lot. I don’t know if I can put it in words, but I don’t want to think about it too much, just because I still have three days left, but I bet it will be a pretty big moment in my career. “

A win this week would be Oh’s second victory in Queensland after winning the 2015 Ladies Masters at Royal Pines.

” I was thinking about it. I actually don’t like the (green) grain and I don’t like the heat so I’m glad I shot a good score today but hopefully a second win in Queensland would be pretty nice, ”Oh said.

Oh is one of the biggest names in a small WPGA group that has been wiped out by the losses of Hannah Green, Sarah Kemp, and Steph Kyriacou.

Perth-born winner Green withdrew last week due to border restrictions and quarantine regulations, while Kemp and Kyriacou both tested positive for Covid-19 on the eve of the event .

“I felt really bad for them,” Oh said.

“I think Steph maybe wasn’t feeling very well, so I hope she’s okay. It’s a real shame because she was obviously in very good shape.

“Even without the big names, with WA (the players) not being able to come as well, I think we still have a pretty good field this week.”

With the Australian WPGA played this week in conjunction with the Australian PGA, Oh was in the same squad on Thursday as men’s tournament favorite Min Woo Lee, who clocked a first round of 68.

He is truly impressive. (His) short game, throws … I was very impressed, ”Oh said of Lee.

“(He) was probably not very happy with the way he played today, but he just couldn’t get the

the grain reads directly on the greens, but he’s obviously a very good player and I can see

Lee said it was “nice” to play alongside Oh.

“Su has hit pretty far,” Lee said.

“It was my first time playing with a lady in an event. It was actually really cool, I enjoyed it.
