Poet .. the first black woman on an American play

Poet and human rights activist Maya Angelou has become the first black woman to appear on a US quarter dollar coin, in a new version of the coin unveiled by the US Treasury Department.

Angelou, author of “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” will be the first character to be commemorated by the American Women’s Quarters program, which is enacted in January 2021.

The authority said in a statement that it had started to “charge for the first quantity of coins”, which features Angelou.

The American Women’s Quarters program requires the Mint to issue quarter-dollar bills each year between 2022 and 2025, showcasing the images of five different trailblazers who achieved accomplishments for America.
