Herbert James Draper, born in 1863, was an English painter. His work by him falls within the Classicism movement that was prevalent in the Victorian era. Here is a list of top paintings By Herbert James Draper
Draper was the son of a jeweler and received an education from the Bruce Castle School in Tottenham. His formal art education began at the Royal Academy, where he ended up winning a gold medal in 1889. This afforded him the opportunity to go on a number of educational trips to Rome and Paris. In the 1890s he settled in London where he found work as an illustrator.
1894 marks the year that Draper entered the most prolific period in his career. His focus on him was ancient Greece and all the mythological scenes that came with it. Some of his works by him from this time were acquired by the Tate Gallery, evidence of the great contributions that Draper gave to the British art world.
As was common in the day, Draper was commissioned to paint the ceiling of Drapers Hall, a church in London. He was also involved in the yearly expositions that the Royal Academy held, starting in 1890 and continuing until his death.
Later on in his career, the subject matter of mythological scenes fell out of favor, and Draper’s popularity fell with it. To combat this, Draper turned to portraits to stay relevant and to support himself. Draper was quite famous at the time and managed to make a name for himself as a portrait artist. Despite this, his popularity still faded towards the end of his life in 1920.
Despite being dead for 90 years, Draper’s art was recently the center of a fresh debate in 2010. The Royal Cornwall Museum sold one of his paintings in order to get their finances in order. The ensuing debate questioned whether art should be sold for this specific purpose or not.
