Man shot by police near Barriere prompts 5 Freeway overnight shutdown – Kamloops News

UPDATE: 10:45 a.m.

A man was shot by police along the 5 Freeway near Barriere overnight, causing the highway to be closed overnight.

In a press release from the BC RCMP, Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet says police responded to the road south of Barriere just before 10 p.m. Friday night, after receiving a report that they had left a man on the side of the road and picked up what appeared to be a “weapon”.

Shoihet says an “interaction” occurred between the man and responding officers, with police shooting and wounding the man. It is unclear what prompted police to fire their firearms, how many officers shot the man, or how many shots were fired.

In his press release, Shoihet did not say whether the man did in fact have a weapon, or what that weapon might have been.

Police on the scene began giving the man first aid after the shooting, until paramedics arrived and took him to a hospital. The extent of the man’s injuries was not disclosed.

No officers were injured in the altercation.

Police have notified the British Columbia Office of Independent Investigations of the shooting. The IOI is a civilian-led police watchdog that investigates any incident involving the police that results in injury or death. Because the IOI is now investigating, Shoihet says he won’t give any more details about the shooting.

Shoihet says that the Southeast District General Investigation Section is also conducting a concurrent criminal code investigation.
