Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has joined the final 3-player list for the FIFA World Player of the Year for 2021, but faces competition from Egyptian star Mohamed Salah and the ‘Argentinian Lionel Messi.
FIFA announced the names of the three players in a presentation before handing out the award on January 17, on a TV show in Zurich.
Lewandowski won the award in 2020 and former Germany international Sami Khedira said there was a “good chance” of retaining the award.
“I will bet on him because he is a very incredible player,” Khedira said after the shortlist announcement.
Lewandowski has set many records, but Salah, the Liverpool star, presents a very good level, although Messi, with Paris Saint-Germain, may not be at his best.
The shortlist for the best player includes Barcelona’s Jennifer Hermoso and Alexia Botías, and Chelsea’s Sam Kerr.
