Fontana police shoot Riverside man they say shot officer – Press Enterprise

Fontana police officers shot a man after he allegedly opened fire during a pursuit Friday night.

Officers were called to a gas station in the 11000 block of Sierra Avenue around 10:20 p.m. for a reported shooting, police said. The suspected shooter was last seen running into the neighborhood south of Jurupa and east of Sierra Avenues, and a perimeter was set up as police combed the area.

About an hour later, an officer saw a suspect matching the shooter’s description run south out of the neighborhood onto Sierra Avenue and ordered the person to stop.

The suspect fired multiple shots at the officer, who returned fire, striking the man in the hand, police said. Paul Valenzuela, 37, of Riverside, was arrested and taken to a hospital.

Valenzuela was found on probation for drug possession and is a documented gang member, according to police.

No residents or officers were injured in the shooting.

The shooting is under review by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
