Christopher Sultana to stand trial for death in Chester Hill garbage truck accident

A garbage truck driver appeared in court after being charged in an accident that killed an elderly woman crossing the street.

A Sydney garbage truck driver who collided with an elderly woman is set to stand trial after pleading not guilty to driving in a way that allegedly caused her death.

Christopher Shane Raymond Sultana was behind the wheel of a Volvo garbage compactor when he crashed into the woman near the intersection of Gurney Road and Woodland Road in Chester Hill around 8:30 a.m. on February 23, 2021.

Security camera footage captured the moment the 33-year-old Campbelltown man collided with the woman crossing Woodland Road when Sultana turned onto Gurney Road and crashed into her.

He was charged with dangerous driving resulting in death and pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned at Sydney’s Downing Central District Court on Friday.

The court heard that Sultana’s trial was expected to last up to seven days.

Judge Graeme Henson scheduled a pre-trial preparation hearing for November 25.

The trial is scheduled to begin on January 16, 2023.

After Sultana’s first appearance in court, her defense attorney, Bryan Wrench, said he was “traumatized” by the incident.

Sultana remains free on bail.
