Former DFAT Australia-China Council specialist Andrew Phelan said Australians needed to “hold on for a little while” before things got back to normal in the economy.
It comes as Qantas and Jetstar have reduced capacity across their network.
Domestic flights have been reduced by 75% from pre-coronavirus levels, with international connections falling to 20%.
“I think what we need to do… is hang in there for a little while,” Mr Phelan told Sky News host Chris Smith.
“And then things will bounce back very quickly.
“Wait a little longer, and we’ll be out of this pretty soon, and people will start buying plane tickets again.”
