China announced that Gulf Cooperation Council countries had expressed support for their handling of a number of sensitive issues, including the issue of Uyghur Muslims.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Friday that foreign ministers from the Gulf states and Gulf Cooperation Council secretary-general Nayef Falah Al-Hajraf expressed strong support for the “China’s legitimate positions on issues related to Taiwan and Xinjiang (the Uighur Autonomous Region) and human rights.”, according to the Associated Press.

He added that they had expressed their opposition to interference in China’s internal affairs and attempts to rule the sport, and affirmed their support for China’s hosting of the next Winter Games, which will begin in Beijing on February 4.

The statement comes as China and the Gulf Cooperation Council reach an agreement to establish a strategic partnership and complete negotiations on a free trade agreement as soon as possible, and the holding of a strategic dialogue session between the China and the Gulf Cooperation Council and the adoption of an action plan for 2022-2025 to “raise bilateral relations to a new level”, according to Wang.
