To recognize this, Australians are generally given Anzac Day as a public holiday to attend dawn ceremonies and to treat the day with the reverence that it deserves.
But if Anzac Day falls on a weekend, not every state has a replacement public holiday on the next business day.
Here’s a quick state-by-state guide:
Anzac Day in 2022 falls on a Monday, meaning it will be recognized as a public holiday.
According to the Public Holidays Act 2010an additional public holiday will only be given in NSW if the following events fall on a weekend: Australia Day, New Year’s Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
Victorians will get a public holiday for Anzac Day this year.
In Victoria Anzac Day is treated as a half-restricted trading day. This means most shops and businesses will be closed from 12:01am to 1pm on 25 April.
Some shops are exempt from this however, including chemists, petrol stations, cafes, takeaway outlets and hire outlets.
Queenslanders will receive the day off on Monday April 25.
Under Queensland legislation, the Holidays Act 1983 provides for an extra public holiday to be added when Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day falls on a weekend.
South Australians will receive Monday April 25 as a public holiday.
Curiously in South Australia the Holidays Act 1910 (SA) prescribes every Sunday to be a public holiday.
In SA when New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Anzac Day and Christmas Day fall on a Sunday, that day and the following Monday will be public holidays and bank holidays.
West Australians will receive the Monday Anzac Day as a public holiday.
In WA when New Year’s Day, Anzac Day, or Christmas Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday the next following Monday is also a public holiday.
If Boxing Day falls on a Saturday the next following Monday is also a public holiday, and when Boxing Day falls on a Sunday or Monday the next following Tuesday is also a public holiday.
AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY: YES
Residents of the ACT will receive Monday April 25 as a public holiday due to Anzac Day.
The ACT also recognizes additional bank holidays. The Holidays Act 1958 also provides a bank holiday on the first Monday in August – but bank holidays do not apply to everyone.
Tasmanians will receive Monday April 25 as a public holiday.
In Tasmania when Anzac Day falls on Saturday or Sunday, no substitute or additional holiday is observed.
Residents of the Northern Territory will receive Anzac Day as a public holiday due to it falling on a Monday in 2022.
