Alders Fault Rules Committee Chairman for Missed Deadlines on Civilian Police Oversight

On Monday, the city council’s rules committee opened nominations for the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability, more than a month after the Dec. 1 deadline to do so.

The commission was created by the Empowering Communities for Public Safety (ECPS) ordinance in July 2021. The daily line previously reported, the city council missed the December 1 deadline to accept applications mandated by the ECPS ordinance. Without any candidates, the Council was unable to recommend 14 candidates to the mayor before the deadline of January 1, 2022.

Aldermen Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35th constituency) and Daniel La Spata (first constituency) both attributed the delay to the eighth constituency alderman, Michelle Harris, who, as chair of the rules committee, was in charge of publish both the application and information about the application process.

Contentious negotiations around this year’s constituency redistribution and budget last fall may have distracted the rules committee from moving forward with the Community Commission.
