17-year-old boy killed and 4 others injured

A knife-wielding assailant fatally stabbed a teenager and seriously injured four young adults Saturday in the Apple River in Wisconsin, police said.

A 52-year-old male suspect was arrested by the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office in the town of Somerset, police said. There is no longer any danger to the community.

Police said the 17-year-old boy was swimming in the river with a woman and three men, all in their 20s, Minneapolis CBS affiliate WCCO reported. The attack took place just 30 miles east and across the state line from the Twin Cities.

Police said the attacker was part of a different group of tubes in the river at the same time, according to WCCO. Authorities have not publicly speculated on a motive.

The suspect fled but was quickly tracked down and arrested without incident, ABC News reported.

Cops were still investigating Saturday afternoon, but they also had to divert subway traffic from the popular but hard-to-reach area of the Apple River where the attack took place.
