A person who lives nearby said she was not surprised by the tragedy.

“I didn’t see this accident, but it’s been a long time coming,” Stacy Wallwork said. “This construction site has had a lot of reckless drivers. I’ve emailed the city, I’ve talked to the RCMP, I’ve talked to the statutes in Burnaby and no one has really done anything to make it safer.”

She said the city added some additional signs and barricades in the area in the wake of her complaints, but she believes that has only diverted commercial drivers from certain streets and not slowed them down.

Wallwork also said his own car was hit near the scene of Thursday’s crash and he’s concerned his children are walking to school in the area.

“Just knowing that I let my own son walk alone before,” Wallwork said, struggling through tears. “He’s getting to an age where he wants his own independence from him and maybe he doesn’t feel safe for me to do that.”
